NIGERIA CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION MINIMUM STANDARDS (2020 EDITION)

Introduction

The School of General Studies Education at Raphat College of Education Obaagun trains teachers to handle broad-based subjects that promote critical thinking and cultural awareness. It covers communication skills, ethics, and social sciences to prepare graduates for diverse teaching roles. The aim is to develop well-rounded educators who can contribute to national development through quality education.

Philosophy

The General Studies Programme is designed to expose students to a variety of knowledge across disciplines. It aims to enable students appreciate the relationship among disciplines in an integrated world, which has become a big global village in large part due to advances in science and technology which have broken traditional boundaries in human knowledge and communication. The internet is also actively making obsolete the compartmentalization of human knowledge. General Studies therefore offers the potential for bridging gaps in human knowledge, thereby preparing the students to meet the challenges of the changing world adequately.

Objectives of the Programme

The objectives of the programme are to:

  • Participate meaningfully in discussions covering a wide spectrum of disciplines.
  • Analyze Nigerian/human history and cultures, as well as articulate their relative impact on educational and socio-economic development.
  • Critically assess national objectives and how to achieve them.
  • Acquire skills and information for appreciating the basis and nature/character of human knowledge, values and actions.
  • Employ their understanding of the nature/character of human knowledge, values and actions in solving problems.
  • Apply Basic Mathematics skills to solve problems in everyday life.
  • Acquire a proficiency in the use of the English Language for effective communication and teaching.
  • Promote professional competence.
  • Use computers to carry out tasks in the contemporary world.

Admission Requirements

  • A Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or G.C.E. ‘O’ Level with credits in 5 subjects including English Language and mathematics at not more than two sittings. Two of the credits must be relevant to the course the candidate wishes to offer.
  • All candidates wishing to be considered for admission must meet the requirements of an accredited body such as JAMB.
  • Candidate must pass RACOED screening tests and interviews.
