NIGERIA CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION MINIMUM STANDARDS (2020 EDITION)

Introduction

The Department of Social Studies at Raphat College of Education Obaagun aims to equip students with a broad understanding of human society, cultural values, and civic responsibilities. It prepares future teachers to promote national unity, social justice, and active citizenship through classroom instruction. The programme fosters critical thinking, social awareness, and the ability to address societal issues constructively.

Philosophy

The central purpose for the institution of the social studies as a core subject in the basic school programme is to ensure the development of responsible citizenship. The subject is geared towards equipping young people with the requisite knowledge, appropriate skills, values and attitudes necessary to making critical and informed decisions in a culturally diverse society such as Nigeria. In the light of which, the NCE social studies curriculum is designed with the appropriate philosophy, content and methodology that is geared towards equipping a crop of teachers who are academically and professionally competent with the desirable values and attitudes to undertake this task. The fundamental focus of social studies is man and his complex relationships in the world around and beyond him. The NCE Social Studies curriculum attempts to instill in its products the basic knowledge, desirable values, and skills for investigating, analyzing and explaining these interrelationships.

Objectives of the Programme

The objectives of the programme are to:

  • Produce professionally and academically competent NCE Social Studies teachers for the Junior Secondary Schools.
  • Prepare teachers who will inculcate in their pupils’ rational adjustment to their physical and social environment through acquisition of knowledge, attitudes, values, appreciations and skills necessary for developing social and civic responsibilities.
  • Produce students who are capable of benefiting from further education in social studies and other related areas.

Admission Requirements

  • A Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or G.C.E. ‘O’ Level with credits in 5 subjects including English Language and mathematics at not more than two sittings. Two of the credits must be relevant to the course the candidate wishes to offer.
  • All candidates wishing to be considered for admission must meet the requirements of an accredited body such as JAMB.
  • Candidate must pass RACOED screening tests and interviews.
