NIGERIA CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION MINIMUM STANDARDS (2020 EDITION)
Introduction
The Department of Political Science at Raphat College of Education Obaagun is established to train competent teachers who understand the workings of political systems, governance, and civic responsibilities. The programme equips students with the knowledge and skills needed to critically analyze political issues, contribute to national development, and educate others about democratic values and good governance. Our graduates are expected to be leaders, researchers, and educators who can shape the future of political thought in Nigeria.
Philosophy
Political Science is the study of power and power relations among men within the state and the international system. In other words, it is the systematic and analytical study of the acquisition, control and exercise of power by individuals, groups and organizations’ within the Political System. As an instrument for citizenship education, Political Science inculcates in the citizenry the knowledge of government, its processes, principles, political theories, democratic ideals, values, attitudes and norms that are essential for the development and sustenance of a democratic culture and stable polity. The study of Political Science is also useful for the understanding of relations among states and international organization’s, their interdependence, co-operation, peaceful co-existence and mutual assistance.
Objectives of the Programme
The objectives of the programme are to:
- To produce proficient teachers of Government who can demonstrate sound knowledge of Political science.
- To train teachers of the subject who, not only possess confidence, skills and techniques necessary for the teaching of the subject but also possess the proper values and attitudes towards Political Science as a discipline of study.
- To inculcate within the scope of the students’ training the necessary values, skills and techniques for effective and moral leadership.
- To inculcate in the students values of citizenship that will broaden their sense and scope of participation in community as well as national affairs.
- To produce teachers that can inspire and inculcate in the students, the values and attitudes of Pan-Africanism, African nationalism and African brotherhood.
- To train teachers who can impart values that will promote the growth of international co-operation, co-existence and mutual assistance.
Admission Requirements
- A Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or G.C.E. ‘O’ Level with credits in 5 subjects including English Language and mathematics at not more than two sittings. Two of the credits must be relevant to the course the candidate wishes to offer.
- All candidates wishing to be considered for admission must meet the requirements of an accredited body such as JAMB.
- Candidate must pass RACOED screening tests and interviews.
