NIGERIA CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION MINIMUM STANDARDS (2020 EDITION)

Introduction

The Department of Physics at Raphat College of Education Obaagun aims to train skilled teachers with a solid foundation in the principles and applications of physics. The programme focuses on developing students’ understanding of physical laws, scientific inquiry, and practical experiments. Graduates are prepared to teach physics effectively at the basic education level and contribute to scientific literacy and development in Nigeria.

Philosophy

The philosophy of the Nigeria Certificate in Education (N.C.E.) physics is inspired by the desire to help students become intellectually informed in physics, and by the need to produce competent and effective teachers with good mastery of content and method, and a knowledge of the development of the learner.

Objectives of the Programme

The objectives of the programme are to:

  • Acquire basic knowledge of the organizational concepts and techniques in practical physics and laboratory management.
  • Discover that the fundamental ideas of physics evolved from a process of inquiry that leads to scientific attitudes which are transferable to other life situations.
  • Plan and effectively execute physics-based lessons in B1-B9 classes in accordance with the UBE policy.
  • Acquire sound basic knowledge of the physics concepts and principles to equip them for further studies in physics and physics- related courses.
  • Explain the nature of science
  • Use science resources effectively
  • Use Information Technology (IT) effectively to support pupils/students in learning physics
  • Demonstrate the understanding of concepts of physics and use them and revise them when necessary.
  • Organize physics lessons for the whole class, groups, and individuals effectively.
  • Recognize the difficulties students face in learning physics.
  • Remedy students’ misconceptions in physics.
  • Develop pupils’ use of physics language.
  • Carry out formative, diagnostic and summative assessment of students’ work (theory and practice) in physics very successfully.
  • Transit into undergraduate programmes offered in universities or similar higher institutions.

Admission Requirements

  • A Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or G.C.E. ‘O’ Level with credits in 5 subjects including English Language and mathematics at not more than two sittings. Two of the credits must be relevant to the course the candidate wishes to offer.
  • All candidates wishing to be considered for admission must meet the requirements of an accredited body such as JAMB.
  • Candidate must pass RACOED screening tests and interviews.
