NIGERIA CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION MINIMUM STANDARDS (2020 EDITION)
Introduction
The Department of English Language at Raphat College of Education Obaagun is committed to training competent teachers with strong communication skills and a solid grasp of the English language. The programme focuses on developing students’ proficiency in listening, speaking, reading, and writing, while also exposing them to literature and language structure. It prepares graduates to teach effectively at the basic education level and pursue further studies in English and related fields.
Philosophy
The philosophy behind the idea of having a separate programme for English as a single major is to deepen the competence for growth and development of teacher trainees as well as using the course as a vehicle for facilitating linguistic and literary knowledge of learners at the Basic Education level.
Objectives of the Programme
The objectives of the programme are to:
- Develop the four English language skills; listening; speaking, reading, and writing for communicative purposes.
- Make students become confident and competent in the use of spoken and written English for various purposes.
- Equip students to teach English Language and Literature effectively at the Basic Education level.
- Prepare students for further studies in English Language and Literature.
Admission Requirements
- A Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or G.C.E. ‘O’ Level with credits in 5 subjects including English Language and mathematics at not more than two sittings. Two of the credits must be relevant to the course the candidate wishes to offer.
- All candidates wishing to be considered for admission must meet the requirements of an accredited body such as JAMB.
- Candidate must pass RACOED screening tests and interviews.
