Department of Chemistry
NIGERIA CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION MINIMUM STANDARDS (2020 EDITION)
Introduction
The Department of Chemistry at Raphat College of Education Obaagun trains future teachers with a solid grounding in chemical principles, reactions, and laboratory techniques. The programme combines theory with practical work to build analytical and problem-solving skills. Graduates are equipped to teach chemistry at the basic education level and support scientific advancement in Nigeria.
Philosophy
The intrinsic and utility values of Chemistry in all spheres of human activity necessitated its inclusion in the NCE curriculum. Consequently, the teaching and learning of Chemistry should be such as to produce competent teachers that can transmit these values to the learners.
Objectives of the Programme
The objectives of the programme are to:
- Develop functional knowledge of chemistry concepts and principles.
- Observe and explore the chemical environment
- Apply the skills and knowledge gained through the study of chemistry to solve day-to-day problems
- Explain simple natural phenomena.
- Develop scientific attitudes such as curiosity, objectivity, creativity etc.
- Manipulate simple apparatus and use of chemicals for purposes of demonstration, production.
- Improvise simple equipment from available junk in the local environment.
Admission Requirements
- A Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or G.C.E. ‘O’ Level with credits in 5 subjects including English Language and mathematics at not more than two sittings. Two of the credits must be relevant to the course the candidate wishes to offer.
- All candidates wishing to be considered for admission must meet the requirements of an accredited body such as JAMB.
- Candidate must pass RACOED screening tests and interviews.
