NIGERIA CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION MINIMUM STANDARDS (2020 EDITION)

Introduction

The Department of Biology at Raphat College of Education Obaagun is designed to train competent teachers with a deep understanding of living organisms and life processes. The programme emphasizes both theoretical knowledge and practical skills through experiments and fieldwork. It prepares graduates to teach biology effectively at the basic education level and encourages interest in scientific and environmental studies.

Philosophy

The curriculum is designed to produce knowledgeable, highly motivated and effective professional teachers of biology who will support learners to develop an appreciation and understanding of biological processes and principles. The programme is also designed to develop the ability to adapt to the changing situations in science and the technologically oriented society.

Objectives of the Programme

The objectives of the programme are to:

  • View biology as a process of inquiry into the living world.
  • critically analyze the activities of living things in their environment
  • Demonstrate practical skills in handling scientific apparatus.
  • Demonstrate excellence and professional competence in teaching biology.
  • Exhibit positive scientific attitudes and values in the society.
  • Promote positive disposition towards biological science and the scientific enterprise.
  • Apply concepts and methods acquired in the course in new areas of study and in everyday situations.
  • Make a successful career in biology teaching.
  • Successfully qualified to undertake a B.Ed./B.Sc. (Ed) degree programmes.

Admission Requirements

  • A Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or G.C.E. ‘O’ Level with credits in 5 subjects including English Language and mathematics at not more than two sittings. Two of the credits must be relevant to the course the candidate wishes to offer.
  • All candidates wishing to be considered for admission must meet the requirements of an accredited body such as JAMB.
  • Candidate must pass RACOED screening tests and interviews.
