NIGERIA CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION MINIMUM STANDARDS (2020 EDITION)

Introduction

The Department of Arabic Language at Raphat College of Education Obaagun focuses on training teachers with strong skills in reading, writing, speaking, and understanding Arabic. The programme emphasizes classical and modern Arabic, including its role in Islamic studies and communication. It prepares graduates to teach Arabic effectively at the basic education level and supports further academic pursuits in the language.

Philosophy

Modern man can hardly contemplate communal life without the instrument of language. Performance in language, especially spoken language, defines personality. For the teacher, his credibility is almost entirely anchored on his competence in communicating ideas and stimulating learning through his use of language. Articulate and well-spoken teachers also invariably win the hearts and respect of their students or pupils. Arabic Language is related to growth and development of man in the contemporary life i.e. cultural, intellectual, political and economical. Teaching and learning of Arabic is as well an essential tool for knowledge acquisition, dissemination and application. Literature generally is known to be ‘Language applied’. It is known also to embody the totality of the worldview of a people – social and political formations, culture, fears, anxieties, aspirations, etc. study a language without its literature and culture is known to be a serious disservice.

Objectives of the Programme

The objectives of the programme are to:

  • Prepare the students-teachers for the task of teaching the language at the Primary and Junior Secondary School levels.
  • Enable students use Arabic as a Medium of Instruction.
  • Help student – teachers acquire spoken and written competence in the Arabic language.
  • Acquaint student-teachers with the socio-political and cultural lives of the speakers of the language, with a view to promoting international understanding.
  • Prepare them for further studies in Arabic Education and other areas of Arabic Studies.

Admission Requirements

  • A Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or G.C.E. ‘O’ Level with credits in 5 subjects including English Language and mathematics at not more than two sittings. Two of the credits must be relevant to the course the candidate wishes to offer.
  • All candidates wishing to be considered for admission must meet the requirements of an accredited body such as JAMB.
  • Candidate must pass RACOED screening tests and interviews.
