It is absolutely necessary and imperative to encourage and promote the training of teachers in science disciplines in a developing country like Nigeria. The reason for this is that science forms the very foundation upon which technological advancement, economic growth, and human welfare, health and progress are built. As a result, it is of utmost importance that teachers in science subjects are trained in a comprehensive, evidence-based, and forward-looking manner to achieve these desired outcomes.

The core philosophy of the School of Science is centered on providing teachers with an education that is thorough, empirical, and anticipatory in nature, primarily focused on science discipline. The goal of such education is to prepare teachers to become highly effective and efficient educators, capable of imparting the necessary knowledge and skills to their students. This, in turn, will enable the students to develop into innovative and productive members of society, ultimately contributing to the overall growth and development of Nigeria.

The NCE programme in the school of sciences is designed to:

1. Acquire enough skill to ensure competence in different science disciplines.
2. Identify major problems in science.
3. Make rational judgements based on undertaking of method of Science.
4. Demonstrate practical skills in handling scientific apparatus.
5. Motivate the study of science at primary and secondary school levels.
6. Develop spirit of enquiry and creativity.
