NIGERIA CERTIFICATE IN EDUCATION MINIMUM STANDARDS (2020 EDITION)

The philosophy behind the idea of having a separate programme for English as a single  major is to deepen the competence for growth and development of teacher trainees as well as using the course as a vehicle for facilitating linguistic and literary knowledge of learners at the Basic Education level.

The objectives of the NCE English programme are to:

  1. Develop the four English language skills; listening; speaking, reading, and writing for communicative purposes;
  2. Make students become confident and competent in the use of spoken and written English for various purposes;
  3. Equip students to teach English Language and Literature effectively at the Basic Education level; and
  4. Prepare students for further studies.
  1. A Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or G.C.E. ‘O’ Level with credits in 5 subjects including English Language and mathematics at not more than two sittings. Two of the credits must be relevant to the course the candidate wishes to offer.
  2. All candidates wishing to be considered for admission must meet the requirements of an accredited body such as JAMB.
  3. Candidate must pass RACOED screening tests and interviews.

 

ADDITIONAL ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS

In addition to the general admission requirements, candidates wishing to read English as a single major must have the following:

  1. Credit passes in English language and literature in English at WASC/SSCE/GCE ‘O’ Level/ NBAIS/NABTEB or NECO;
  2. Any other qualification that may be added by an accredited authority from time to time.
